The World's First Circumnavigation of the Island of New Guinea

The World’s First Circumnavigation of the Island of New Guinea
“We have completed the world’s first circumnavigation of the island of New Guinea in a traditional sailing canoe — using only local resources, skill, and determination.”
Danish adventurer Thor F. Jensen and Papua New Guinean sailors Sanakoli John and Justin John made history by sailing around the entire island of New Guinea in a traditional outrigger canoe. The expedition lasted 13 months and 21 days, covering 6,300 kilometers and beginning and ending at Tawali Resort, Milne Bay.

A Cultural and Historic Achievement
The voyage was the first of its kind — never before had anyone completed such a journey in a traditional canoe using wind and paddle power alone. The crew navigated through unpredictable weather, strong currents, and remote coastlines, relying on local knowledge, community support, and navigation skills.
The adventure was followed in real time via Facebook and received widespread media coverage internationally. The timing of their return coincided with the National Canoe Festival in Alotau, where the team was honored on stage and awarded official medals for their extraordinary achievement.
